Moving with Children

Young children, especially those who have never moved before, may be apprehensive about leaving their current home, so preparing them for moving is very important. Explain the reasons for the move and how they can help make it a success. Try to explain the move on your Child's level of understanding, and encourage them to express their feelings openly. They may be upset at first, but once they understand that the move is inevitable and that you are counting on them to help, most disagreement will disappear. Explain to them that they will have to leave playmates, school, and their room behind, but also help them anticipate the new friends and fun that awaits them at their new home.

Your First Visit to Your New Location

You will probably make at least one house hunting trip to your new community. Ask your Realtor to prepare you with a map of the area, information about the schools, park district, etc... Take along a camera and record what you see and show it to your children. The tree that is waiting for a treehouse, the local baseball or soccer field, the new school, library, etc... maybe even a shot of the kids next door! You will see their enthusiasm grow with each new possibility you present to them! You can have them make a moving scrapbook with the photos of the old and new!

Arrival Day!

Plan ahead for the BIG DAY. Be sure to have snacks, things to do, and a pillow and blanket ready in case the children get tired before the beds are up (You may even end up using those yourself!) An instant camera may keep them busy, sometimes a tape recorder is a good idea. Everyone will be under a lot of stress that day, so plan ahead to keep the children occupied!
